How to Get a Veteran ID Card?
First, you’ll be required to be enrolled yourself in a VA health card. If you are not already enrolled, you can apply now.
After you get your VA Health Care Welcome Call, you can apply for a VHIC in person at a VA medical center or online.

Contact your nearest VA medical center and ask to speak with an enrollment coordinator. Ask the coordinator to help you arrange to have your photo taken for your new Veterans Health ID card.

Bring a current, unexpired ID to your photo appointment
You can bring any of these ID types:
Photo ID issued by a federal, state, or local government showing your name, address, and date of birth
State-issued driver’s license, or
US passport, or
Online Process:
You can sign in to AccessVA to request your VHIC. You will need a Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, My HealtheVet, or Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) account.
Can I Get a VA ID Card Online?
If you serve in the active military, navy, or air service and do not receive a dishonorable discharge, you may be eligible for VA health care benefits.
If you enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981
Unless none of the details below are true for you, you must have served 24 consecutive months or the full term for which you were called to active duty.
This minimum duty requirement may not apply if any of the following are true:
- You were discharged for a disability that was caused—or made worse—by your active-duty service; or
- You were discharged for a hardship or “early out,” or
You served before September 7, 1980.
